Sculptra — Biostimulator Injectable
Sculptra is a poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) biostimulator used to gradually restore facial volume and improve skin firmness by stimulating the body’s own collagen production. PLLA is a biocompatible and absorbable polymer that gradually stimulates fibroblasts in the dermis, promoting the production of Type I and III collagen to improve skin firmness and elasticity.
Sculptra signals the body to produce its own collagen, gradually and naturally, over a period of weeks and months. The result is the client’s own tissue, restored.
What Sculptra Addresses
Sculptra works through three mechanisms: lifting and firming — targeting dermal collagen loss to rebuild the skin’s support matrix; face contouring — improving mid-face volume and structure; and skin texture refinement — helping to smooth uneven texture through dermal thickening.
- Volume loss in the mid-face — As the cheek fat pads descend and deflate, Sculptra stimulates collagen along the cheekbones and mid-face, restoring fullness.
- Jawline definition — The jawline softens as skin loses structural support. Sculptra strengthens the tissue along the jaw, improving definition.
- Temple hollowing — Hollow temples are an early sign of volume loss. Sculptra rebuilds tissue in the temples, creating a smoother transition between the brow and the upper face.
- General skin laxity — For skin that feels looser, Sculptra improves firmness through collagen support across the treated area.
- Nasolabial folds and marionette lines — While not a filler for deep creases, Sculptra can soften these folds by improving overall structure.
How Sculptra Works
Sculptra is made of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) — a biocompatible and absorbable polymer that gradually stimulates fibroblasts in the dermis. PLLA has been used in absorbable sutures for decades. The treatment uses Collagen Active Renewal Technology, supplied as a powder reconstituted with sterile water, then given through a series of small injections into the deeper layers of the skin.
Once placed, the PLLA microparticles act as a scaffold. They do not fill the space themselves. They trigger a response from fibroblast cells — responsible for producing collagen and elastin. The fibroblasts recognise the microparticles and begin depositing new collagen around them. Over the following weeks and months, the PLLA is gradually absorbed, leaving behind the collagen structure that the client’s own cells have built.
Type I and Type III collagen are both stimulated — the structural collagen that gives skin its framework and the supportive collagen that gives it resilience. The result is not just more fullness but better quality tissue.
Treatment Experience
A course of two to three Sculptra sessions is typical, spaced four to six weeks apart. Each session takes thirty to forty-five minutes. A topical numbing cream is applied, and the product is given through several injection points in the targeted areas.
There is some swelling and tenderness for the first few days after each session. This is normal — partly the fluid from the injection and partly the immune system responding to the microparticles. Some people notice small lumps under the skin that resolve as the product is distributed. Massaging the treated area as instructed helps ensure even distribution.
Results appear gradually, typically within two to three months, and are long-lasting — up to eighteen to twenty-four months. The swelling from the session makes the face look fuller for a day or two, but this is not the final result. The real change appears from around six weeks onward.
